Kitchen tiles should establish a sense of style and elegance in the kitchen. This article looks at the different types of kitchen tiles, helping buyers to purchase the right tiles for their needs whether it be contemporary, chic or timeless; it does this by outlining the basic design principles of the different types of tiles on the market today!

Although many people think about tiles in a bathroom, it is also very useful to have kitchen wall tiles. These easy to clean, durable tiles which can give the desired look make them a great buy, as you don’t have to keep re-tiling the kitchen year after year.

However, establishing what kind of tiles to fit in your kitchen is something that should be done with careful consideration.  Many people simply purchase what they like in the display, or what is a good price: but remember that the tiles that you choose will have to last for a while and the appliances that you have may change over time, so you need a tile design that will go with either silver/chrome appliances or white ones.Whte used to be the favourite appliance colour, but it’s long been taken over by chrome.

Rustic farmhouse tiles would not look very good in a modern or minimalistic kitchen.Do not use colours that are mismatched or will even look like an after thought, such as Mexican hand painted types. Try choosing neutral colours that will blend into the overall style of your kitchen and that will accentuate it.

Conversely if you are lucky enough o have a huge farmhouse kitchen with large wooden furniture, then don’t opt for sleek, ultra modern tiles with white and chrome effect, since they too will look out of place.Rustic tiles could easily date your kitchen so you need to be careful of this too.

If you are concerned that the tiles you like may not be completely suitable, then simply give yourself time to think before you make your final purchase.Do not be rushed in to anything as things very often look different after a day or two has passed.

Mosaic tiles can look chic in any kitchen, but again, opt for softer shades rather than bright turquoise or aqua marine, since these are really only suitable in small areas.  Mosaics are best as a feature within a tiled wall, rather than forming the wall itself out of mosaic: that went out of fashion in Roman times!

With these principles in mind, it should be easy to establish a cohesive and co-ordinating style for the tiled areas in your kitchen and the result will be a kitchen that does not date quickly and which still looks contemporary in a few years time.
